Amazing Grace

Amazing grace! How Sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!

Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
‘Tis grace that brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun;
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we first begun.

Notes

Amazing Grace is a deeply meaningful Christian hymn, and the word redemption perfectly captures its core message. Written by John Newton, a former slave trader turned preacher, the hymn reflects a dramatic spiritual transformation—from a life of sin to salvation through the grace of God. To a Christian, especially one aware of its ties to the transatlantic slave trade, the song becomes more than just a melody; it is a cry of the soul—a testimony that no one is beyond God’s saving reach.

The line “That saved a wretch like me” is both personal and collective. For enslaved Africans and their descendants, Amazing Grace evolved into an anthem of hope and dignity in the face of unimaginable suffering. The song’s message of unearned grace and spiritual freedom mirrored the yearning for physical freedom. Its simplicity, repetition, and emotional depth made it easy to pass down through generations, often sung in fields, churches, and civil rights marches.

The spiritual power of the hymn resonates with Exodus 3:7“I have indeed seen the misery of my people in Egypt. I have heard them crying out… and I am concerned about their suffering.” Just as God saw the Israelites’ suffering, Amazing Grace assures believers today that God still sees, still saves, and still redeems.

A fitting book that complements this journey is The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, an autobiography of a former African slave who found both freedom and faith. His life mirrors the message of Amazing Grace—that no matter the depth of despair, God’s grace can lead us home.
